I think it’s great when analysts aren’t afraid to voice their opinions about athletes. But, if someone is so absolute in his or her opinion, is it fair to the athlete? The other day ESPN Analyst Trent Dilfer commented on the Kansas City Chiefs’ selection of wide receiver Jonathan Baldwin. Dilfer insinuated that Baldwin was a bad draft choice stating that he had a source that told him Baldwin is known for “undermining his quarterback and coaches.” Well, I have a source that says he had no problem working with Baldwin, and he doesn’t believe Dilfer’s statements to be true. So which source is right? Mine, or Dilfer’s?
I’m a fan of Dilfer; I like his fiery personality and insights. I understand that he may have spoken to a coach that had an undesirable experience with Baldwin. But, I think one thing to keep in mind before you judge the personality of a player is: Did one guy have this experience of him, or did many? Sources and even Analysts could have an agenda when talking about a guy and they could portray him to the public in an inaccurate way. Is it fair to publicly label a player in such a negative way before he even steps foot onto an NFL football field? Only time will tell what Baldwin’s true mode of operating will be. I hope for his sake that my source is right.
Exactly, everyone has opinions about people but when you’re giving information about someone in a public way I think it’s only fair to clarify what is fact and what is opinion. Thanks for the comment!
My favorite “Dilferism” during the draft was him praising every pick and deaming them “quite possibly the smartest, strongest, or most athletic human on the planet.”
Well, personally I value my Son’s opinion more that Dilfer. My son has been studying the Chiefs and the draft for years and he called this pick weeks ago. He said it was the best pick for us. Paoli drafted Brady for God’s sake, among many, many other stars. Paoli is a genius. I have a feeling that Dilfer has an axe to grind with Paoli, but he is using the draft to throw darts at the guy.
Dilfer is a loser!
hey trent ray lewis needs his car washed!
I suspect that time will tell where Baldwin is concerned.
I think its interesting to look back on drafts three or four years down the line and see how these draft experts did. Guys like Kiper and McShay get paid a lot of bank to make predictions and it doesn’t seem to matter whether they are right or not.
Strong opinions are good for business, the public has such a short attention span that even if these predictions are wrong it doesn’t seem to matter. After all look at how many mock drafts these guys have before the draft even begins, mock draft 5.0, mock draft 6.0, they aren’t paid to be right they are paid to write.
Yes, only time will tell with all of these draft picks.
I think all analysts and draft “guru’s” should be held accountable for what they say about another individual. I don’t know, i love Dilfer, but sometimes he can be way off about a person. I feel if youre gonna be honest about an athlete or draft selection, go meet him, shake his hand, get inside his head before you speak, you should NEVER go based of what someone else tells you. Not even your own mother. See it first hand, judge accordingly.
“It doesn’t change my quarterback!” he said in a text message at one point when discussing Wannstedt’s firing, and in another, “Heck yeah I’m leaving. It can only get worse. They had me running a lot of deep routes (this year) and yards were hard to come by. I barely ran intermediate routes; it felt like they were purposely trying to disrupt my draft stock.”
so yeah. he’s an asshole. and a talent. and dilfer was right. a simple google search, that’s what dilfer did. but he was right.
Do you know someone that has worked with JB? Do you know him personally? You seem so absolute with your opinions, I’m curious who your sources are? Is google your only source? The point of my article is that some people may have that impression of him, however, I have multiple sources that do not feel that way about him. So who is right? Only time will tell how he acts in the league. But, I wouldn’t call someone an “asshole” based on something I read on profootballtalk.com.

i’d want to add that he’s also near jarmichael finley in terms of intelligence. and no, that’s not a good thing.
Hey, could the same be said for Tim Tebow… I’m a Donkey fan (a couple bottles of wine deep right now) but everyone loves the guy; the same was said for Brian Griese back in the day. The guy only went on to have a less than admirable career with many different people in organizations saying very bad things about him.
So, people will say negative things about players and they will turn out OK (Ware in Dallas, Tiki in NY, etc) but the thing you have to keep an open mind to are the people that everyone refers to as the “cats meow”…. Everyone has stuff that isn’t exactly “bring home to Mom material” but when it pops up during contract negotiation times, means a bit more.
Cheers:

Very good post. All too often you will see an analyst, radio host or other sports personality talk with an Agenda. Sometimes it is blatantly obvious to the audience too but is rarely admitted.
Fans have an agenda too but we look at Analysts, Radio Hosts, etc.. to give an opinion but one that is based on fact or solid reasoning. Not based on an agenda or vendetta against a person, program, team. etc…
Another great post. Keep them coming
